AUGMENTED MATERIALITY: MODELLING WITH MATERIAL INDETERMINACY
Calculating the deformation factor begins with measuring local geometric deviation, defined as the magnitude of the displacement vector between the reference mesh and the target mesh at each point. These local deviations are then aggregated to produce a global value, representing the average displacement across the entire mesh.
To visualise this dynamically, the VEX code applies the calculated deformation factor iteratively to each point along its normal vector. The system is further refined to compute distinct error vectors between models, differentiating between scan error and print error. These are accumulated across successive generations, producing a continuous cycle of distortion and approximation.
Geometric error is reinterpreted as a spatial and generative condition rather than a static imperfection. By translating error into spatial configurations with architectural qualities, it becomes an active driver of form, capable of producing differentiated typologies and informing new modes of design.
